Urfa, Turkey – Rebels of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and al-Nusra Front (al-Qaeda branch in Syria) launched Friday an offensive against the strongholds of the Lebanese militia of Hezbollah in Jirud Fleita area, of western Kalamoon, near the Lebanese border.

This comes amid conflicting reports on the participation of IS group in these battles.

Opposition activists in Jirud Kalamoon said that factions of the FSA detonated a barrier on the outskirts of the city of Yabroud near the village of al-Sihel –which is under the control of pro-Assad forces and allied Shiite militants of Hezbollah.

The sources pointed out that the bombing caused heavy losses in the ranks of the regime and Hezbollah forces.

Media sources affiliated with the Syrian opposition reported that the joint forces (FSA and al-Nusra) targeted a series of military checkpoints held by Hezbollah in the area surrounding the village of Flaita in Kalamoon.

Heavy losses were reported in the ranks of the pro-Assad security forces and militants of Hezbollah, as the FSA rebels seized a number of heavy and light weapons as well as boxes of ammunition during the operation.

At least three FSA fighters were killed.

Speaking to ARA News in Kalamoon, military official of al-Nusra Front said (under the condition of anonymity): “We as al-Nusra Front in the frontline are separate from the Islamic State and we fear battles will erupt between us.”

He pointed out that IS presence in these areas is only to support pro-Assad forces in Kalamoon as well as taking control of the mountainous territory at the Lebanese borderline.

The military official of al-Nusra told ARA News that the number of IS militants in Kalamoon has recently exceeded 700, adding that this raised their fear of renewal of clashes between both groups.
