Damascus, Syria – On Thursday, Syrian rebel fighters of Ahrar al-Sham took control of Tel al-Kuroom near the regime’s military “Brigade 90” in the countryside of Quneitra province.
The Media Center of the Ahrar al-Sham Movement –affiliated with the Free Syrian Army (FSA)– said that the movement’s fighters, backed by other factions of the FSA, fought fierce battles against pro-Assad army forces in Quneitra, using heavy and medium weapons in order to surround the strategic area of Khan Arnaba.
Activists, based in Quneitra, told ARA News that factions of the armed opposition were able to destroy a number of pro-Assad manned vehicles in addition to the destruction of field cannons with Tao anti-armor missiles.
“Tanks, mortars, and field artillery of 130 caliber were used during the fighting in the vicinity of Tel al-Kuroom to target the pro-regime soldiers,” activists added.
The battle aimed to control the villages of Tel Kuroom, Bizaq, and Sirriya Mint al-Hisan as well as the al-Siyaqa field of the Brigade 90 and the town of Juba to impose a blockade on Khan Arnaba in Quneitra province, according to the statement of opposition factions.
The operation is also meant to reinforce the opposition’s control of the road linking Quneitra to Khan al-Sheeh area in the western countryside of Damascus.
