Erbil Film Festival 2014 inaugurated

Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan – Within the activities of “Erbil: Capital of Arab Tourism 2014″ and under the sponsorship of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), the first International Film Festival in Erbil city was inaugurated on Saturday. The festival is hosted by Saad Abdullah grand hall in the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan. 

Newzad Hadi, the mayor of Erbil, commenced the festival welcoming the attendees and participants as it “supports art in Kurdistan”.

“The festival is also a good chance to invest and exchange expertise, and it’s an opportunity for Kurdistani artists to benefit from prominent Arab and European figures who made a remarkable contribution to the development of cinema,” Hadi said.

Director Nasir Hasan, , the festival’s manager, emphasized during the inauguration of the festival the importance of the cinema as a tool of self-expression, pointing out that this is the first Kurdish Cinema festival for long and short movies.

The festival included the announcement of the judges’ names of the long and short movies where a collection of Arab and international artistic figures participated.

Nasir also added, “26 short movies and 12 long movies are competing as well as displaying other 24 films, including four long Kurdish films”.

Nasir talked about the festival rewards: “Golden Horses will be given to the first three films as well as fifteen appreciation rewards will be delivered to the participating movies.”

Many Arab and western delegations of directors, actors, writers and authors, from Iran, Turkey, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, UAE, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, attended the Erbil Film Festival.
