Urfa, Turkey– The Field Command of the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) announced its control over a number of villages in the western countryside of Sere Kaniye city in Hasaka province after clashes with fighters of the Qaeda splinter group of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) on Wednesday.

The military campaign came to “assist the resistance of Kobane city against ISIL fighters and in revenge to the ISIL attack in Qamishli city”, according to a statement by the Field Command of the YPG forces −military wing of the Democratic Union Party (PYD).

The statement, which was published on the official website of the YPG forces, stated that its fighting forces in Sere Kaniye/Ras al-Ain area launched a military campaign against the stronghold of ISIL fighters who had taken the village of Tel Khanzir as a start point for “carrying out their terrorist attacks on the peaceful residents of the surrounding villages”, according to the YPG.

The statement added that the YPG military campaign came to prevent any possible ISIL attacks and to abort “their aggressive plans”, pointing out that the recent military operations “started at 11 pm on Tuesday by forcing the way into ISIL strongholds, hitting and controlling two ISIL-led checkpoints”.

“In a swift attack, the YPG forces were able to control the strategic hill of Tel Khanzir village, which was followed by liberating the surrounding villages one after the other in a record time. The YPG forces control now the villages of Tel Ghazal, Majo, Farisa al-Sharabin, Farisa Sofiyan, Farisa Dasho, Tel al-Maha and al-Bogha village,” the statement said.

During the clashes, 32 ISIL fighters were killed, according to the YPG statement. “Dead bodies of 15 of them are under our control, while the other bodies are left in the areas separating our forces (YPD) and ISIL fighters. We have seized weapons and ammunitions.”

The Kurdish YPG forces also call on “Arab brothers” to cooperate with their forces “who try to maintain the social principles of co-existence between all the region’s social components”.
